Sounio is a place well known in east Attica. The Temple of Poseidon is located on a rock 60 meters above the sea, in the southernmost part of the city. That is where those who leave Athens by boat see for the last time or the place where one first meets when approaching the city. The temple is a notorious place of worship, a sacred spot dedicated to Poseidon. There is probably no better place than this holy rock for a temple dedicated to the god of the sea.
