The Yachting History

Yachting is a word synonymous to luxury and high quality of life. Everyone knows it and uses it from time to time as a reference to wealth and dreams but few are the ones who actually know the history behind it.

Yachts were firstly invented by the Dutch Navy in the 14th century in order to be able to handle the constant threat that the pirates posed at the seas of the known world. They were built so as to be able to hand down the hostile ships quickly in shallow water where the large ships were unable to sail. Their initial name was jachtschips (hunting boats).

Not much time passed until wealthy merchants and ship owners started to utilize these smaller and speedier boats as a means to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships. But besides the upcoming middle class, sailing yachts quickly caught the attention of royalty. Kings and queens favored these small and flexible boats for the pleasure cruises and inevitably, for racing activities. English yachting is said to have officially begun when King Charles ll sailed the Mary to Britain following his return from exile in the Netherlands.

Today, yachts have developed a lot. Thanks to the immense innovations in technology and materials, they can be used to a wide variety of uses – from long-range cruising, to fishing and watersports  or they can even be used as a temporary home or as permanent residence.yachting greece
